Rowing the Pacific – lessons from the ultimate rowing challenge, 7000 miles from Japan to San Francisco with guest Mick Dawson

On the 8th May 2009 Mick Dawson and Chris Martin set off from Choshi in Japan to row 7,000 miles across the North Pacific to San Francisco. Crossing the North Pacific in an open rowing boat was one of the world’s great firsts and, after two failed attempts he was determined to make it. Storms, fatigue, equipment failure, intense hunger and lack of water were just some of the challenges. Facing near certain death they eventually reached the iconic span of San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge after a back breaking voyage of over six months. Mick Dawson is a former Royal Marine Commando, a professional sailor, motivational speaker and film maker. Having been gripped by Mick’s book ‘Battling the Oceans in a rowboat’ I had to interview him and find out what we can learn about leadership, strategy and courage from one of the most incredible adventures of modern times.

Mick Dawson is a former Royal Marine Commando, a professional sailor, motivational speaker and film maker. Mick’s rowed across the Atlantic Ocean twice and together with his friend and rowing partner Chris Martin he skippered the first and only rowing boat ever to cross the North Pacific Ocean from Japan to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, one of the last great firsts. An epic voyage of almost 7,000 miles which took over six months to complete.
