From Inner-City Streets to Mountain Slopes: Helping Young People Find Confidence, Hope and a Future with Dan Charlish

What happens when you take young people from inner-city communities, many of whom have never left their local area, and introduce them to the challenge, freedom and possibility of skiing and snowboarding?

In this episode, I speak with Dan Charlish, Founder and CEO of Snow Camp, the UK’s only national youth snow sports charity. Since 2003, Snow Camp has supported more than 23,000 young people to build confi-dence, gain qualifications and access real career pathways. During the pandemic, Dan also launched Stop.Breathe.Think, a national online mental health service offering free counselling to young people without the wait.

Here are some insights from the interview you don’t want to miss:

Turning Passion into Purposeful Work
Dan highlighted the importance of aligning your career with your passion, explaining that his intrinsic motivation to help others—and lack of interest in traditional corporate jobs—drove him to a rewarding path in the charity sector. He stressed that passion is infectious and can inspire teams and supporters .

The Power of Experiential Youth Work
Dan discovered that snow sports, though typically inaccessible to inner-city youth, serve as a powerful tool for engagement, personal development, and aspiration-raising. Snowboarding and skiing provide not just skill learning but transformative experiences that help young people realise their own potential.

Building Sustainable, Impactful Charities
Success in the charitable sector relies on more than just a good idea. Dan emphasised the significance of building invested communities, nurturing dedicated teams, and developing strong relationships with funders and corporates—not just as donors but as proud stakeholders in the mission.

Innovation in the Face of Crisis
When COVID-19 shut down Snow Camp’s core activities, Dan and his team responded by launching Stop, Breathe, Think, an online mental health support platform for young people. This initiative not only met a critical need but also demonstrated adaptability, leveraging existing talent and partnerships to deliver new impact.

Effective Corporate Engagement
Dan revealed the value for businesses in forming authentic charity partnerships. When companies genuinely invest time and staff engagement (not just money), it raises morale and deepens organisational values, making the partnership meaningful for both sides.

This is a conversation about widening horizons, creating opportunity, building charities that last, and using sport, relationships and mental health support to help young people move towards a more hopeful future.
